Another outdoor season over and done all too quickly. There were a few remaining games to play to complete the league on the 3rd September. Both were critical; Fenstanton Red had to win 7-0 to be certain of promotion, even if St Ives Red won 7-0. As it happened, St Ives Red got the result they wanted and Fenstanton Red won 5-2, losing out on promotion to St Ives Red by just a half a point.

We did almost the same as last year, finishing 5th on both occasions. We lost four more rinks compared to last year, and were down 5.5 points too. Shots difference was -10 this year and -24 last year. If we hadn’t that run of 3 heavy defeats in the middle of the season who knows what might have happened. Onwards and upwards next year. Despite some rumours that seem to be circulating we will still be here and fighting next year.

I would like to say a huge thank you to all of the over 60s players this year. It has been a joy to be captain again. Once again, we were never short of players for a match. If someone couldn’t make a game we had plenty of reserves to fill the gap. That made me very happy and I am grateful for your commitment. With a squad of of 18 over the season I had some tricky moments trying to pick a team and ensuring that everyone played an equal amount of games. I hope nobody feels that they didn’t get the games they should have.

I would also like to say a special thank you to the team members who were selected as reserves for the home matches and turned up to do the teas. That shows we have a squad, not just individuals who want to turn up, play, and go home again. That commitment – there’s that word again – made my job so much easier. Thanks, and I hope to see you all again for another go next year.
